Can Dogs Eat Chicken?

Yes — cooked, plain, BONELESS chicken is a great protein source for dogs; boiled chicken with rice is the classic recovery meal for upset stomachs. Cooked bones, however, are never okay.

How to serve

Serve skinless, boneless chicken boiled or cooked without fat — no salt, spices, or onion-garlic. Breast is the leanest cut. During stomach upsets veterinarians may suggest a short boiled chicken-and-rice diet — it is a recovery menu, not a permanent one.

Raw chicken can carry salmonella and campylobacter; if you are considering raw feeding, plan it under veterinary guidance rather than alone. Cooked chicken bones splinter and can cause serious injuries — see our bones page for details. Seasoned or sauced leftovers are not suitable either.

Frequently asked questions

Is chicken allergy common in dogs?

Chicken is one of the proteins involved in food sensitivities. For recurring itching, ear issues, or digestive complaints, discuss an elimination diet with your veterinarian.

Can I feed chicken every day?

Plain chicken alone is not a balanced meal — over time it creates nutrient gaps. Balanced food should be the base; chicken stays a treat or a topper.

Can I add the boiling broth to food?

Your own unsalted, onion-free broth is fine in small amounts. Store-bought stock and bouillon contain salt and onion-garlic, so they are out.
