Why is it dangerous?
Cocoa contains two stimulants dogs cannot process quickly: theobromine and caffeine. As they build up, they overstimulate the digestive system, the heart, and the nervous system. The darker the chocolate, the higher the risk: baking chocolate and dark chocolate are the most dangerous, milk chocolate is less concentrated but still unsafe. The same amount is far more serious for a small dog.
White chocolate contains almost no theobromine, but its fat and sugar load can still cause vomiting, diarrhea, and pancreatitis. No type of chocolate should ever be given to a dog on purpose.
What to do if your dog ate chocolate
Note roughly how much was eaten, what type, and when, then call your veterinarian right away — do not wait for symptoms, because early treatment makes a real difference. Never induce vomiting unless a veterinarian tells you to, and take the packaging with you.
