Serve PLAIN pumpkin with the skin and seeds removed, boiled or baked, mashed or in small cubes — no salt, sugar, butter, cinnamon, or nutmeg. One or two teaspoons for small breeds and one or two tablespoons for large dogs is a sensible measure.
Its soluble fiber supports digestion: it can help firm up loose stool and ease mild constipation. Even so, if diarrhea or constipation lasts beyond 24 hours, is bloody, or comes with lethargy, see a veterinarian rather than trying a home remedy — the underlying cause matters.
Do not confuse it with pie filling
Shop-bought pumpkin pie filling contains sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, and nutmeg can be toxic to dogs. Use plain canned pumpkin whose label lists only pumpkin, or pumpkin you cooked plain at home.
