What the debate actually turns on

Raw feeding (BARF) is contested: advocates point to a diet closer to natural feeding, critics to bacterial and balance risks. What is clear in the evidence: raw meat can carry salmonella, campylobacter, listeria, and E. coli, and even a dog showing no symptoms can spread these bacteria through stool and licking into THE HOME and to PEOPLE. With an infant, an elderly person, or someone immunocompromised in the house, this is not only the dog's risk.

The second issue is balance: "meat plus bone" alone is NOT a complete and balanced diet. When calcium-phosphorus ratio, vitamin D, zinc, and copper are set wrong, skeletal and skin problems can appear within months. Commercial raw foods may state they are complete and balanced; you need a plan that looks for that on the label and confirms it with your veterinarian.

If you do feed raw

Use meat with a known source and cold chain, keep a separate bowl and board, wash surfaces and hands after preparation, and never leave it out. COOKED bones are never given (they splinter), and raw bones still carry obstruction and tooth-fracture risks — see our bones page. If buying mince, choose fresh from a trusted source; game meat and uncleaned offal raise parasite risk.

For most dogs the practical, safe route is complete commercial food; if you are considering raw, treat it as a feeding plan built with your veterinarian rather than a trend.

Lethargy, loss of appetite, fever
Bloody or mucousy stool
(Long-term imbalance) Poor coat quality, skeletal problems

Does raw feeding make a dog's coat shinier?

Coat quality reflects overall diet quality; any well-formulated balanced diet achieves the same. Shine alone does NOT prove a diet is balanced — deficiencies show up months later.
