Can Dogs Drink Alcohol?

No — alcohol is toxic to dogs and even small amounts have serious effects: grogginess, vomiting, dropping body temperature and blood sugar, and in severe cases depressed breathing. "One sip won't hurt" is not true.

Why is it dangerous?

Dogs cannot process ethanol the way humans do and they are far smaller; the little left at the bottom of a glass can cause noticeable poisoning. Alcohol depresses the central nervous system and lowers blood sugar and body temperature. In severe cases breathing slows.

There are hidden sources too: RAW YEAST DOUGH ferments in a dog's stomach and produces alcohol (while also causing bloating — see our bread page), and liqueur desserts and sweets, some mouthwashes, and hand sanitizers all contain alcohol.

What to do if your dog drank alcohol

Call your veterinarian without waiting; describe the drink, the estimated amount, and the time. Do not induce vomiting — a groggy dog can inhale vomit. Keep them warm and watched; grogginess, tremors, or slow breathing mean going to an emergency clinic.

Watch for these signs

  • Grogginess, unsteady walking
  • Vomiting, drooling
  • Shivering (dropping body temperature)
  • Slow, deep breathing
  • Unresponsiveness, confusion

Frequently asked questions

My dog licked beer from a glass — what now?

It depends on size and amount; a small lick is usually survived without incident, but there is no safe level of alcohol for a dog. Note the amount and check with your veterinarian.

Why is raw dough an alcohol risk?

Yeast ferments the sugars in dough into alcohol, and that continues inside the stomach. At the same time the dough rises and distends the stomach — a double danger and an emergency.
