The oxalate question
Spinach is rich in oxalates. Oxalate binds calcium, which can add work for the kidneys and contribute to urinary stone formation in predisposed dogs. In a healthy dog, a small occasional portion is not a practical problem; what to avoid is regular, generous servings.
For dogs with kidney failure, a history of calcium oxalate stones, or urinary issues, skip spinach entirely and plan diet changes with your veterinarian.
How to serve
If you do share it: washed, plain steamed or boiled, finely chopped, in small amounts. Add no salt, butter, cream, ONION, or GARLIC — alliums are toxic to dogs and appear in most spinach dishes. Do not share cooked spinach dishes from the table.
